Pseudospectral vs Finite Di erence Methods for Initial Value Problems with Discontinuous Coe cients

چکیده
An initial value problem with piecewise constant coe cients is considered. The accuracies for both nite di erence methods and the pseudospectral method are analyzed, and a modi cation of the initial value problem is suggested. The modi ed problem is shown to have the same temporal period as the original problem does, and a second order accuracy is obtained for the pseudospectral method at integral multiples of the temporal period.

متن کاملFinite Difference and Spectral Methods for Ordinary and Partial Differential Equations
ly u t is nothing more than an element in a Banach space B and this leaves room for applications to a wide variety of problems in di erential equations As in the examples above B might be L and A might be x or x and homogeneous boundary conditions could be included by restricting B appropriately More generally u t could be an vector valued function of multiple space variables The next step is t...
متن کاملOn di!usion approximation with discontinuous coe$cients
Convergence of stochastic processes with jumps to di!usion processes is investigated in the case when the limit process has discontinuous coe$cients. An example is given in which the diffusion approximation of a queueing model yields a di!usion process with discontinuous di!usion and drift coe$cients. c © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. متن کاملSecond order di erence equations for certain families of ‘discrete’ polynomials
In this paper we will consider two algorithms which allow us to obtain second order linear di erence equations for certain families of polynomials. The corresponding algorithms can be implemented in any computer algebra system in order to obtain explicit expressions of the coe cients of the di erence equations. c © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. متن کاملNonsymmetric Black Box multigrid with coarsening by three
The classical Petrov-Galerkin approach to Black Box multigrid for nonsymmetric problems due to Dendy is combined with the recent factor-three-coarsening Black Box algorithm due to Dendy and Moulton, along with a powerful symmetric line Gauss-Seidel smoother, resulting in an e cient and robust multigrid solver. Focusing on the convectiondi usion operator, the algorithm is tested and shown to ach...
